Jonathan Smith, a 43-year-old man, and his co-conspirator, 30-year-old Marcus Guion, planned to rob Michael Beale under the pretense of buying drugs. When Beale answered the door, he saw Smith's gun and attempted to barricade the door with his body while reaching for his own gun. In the ensuing chaos, Beale accidentally fired his gun, prompting Smith to shoot multiple times through the door, ultimately killing Beale.
