He was immediately taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation led to the arrest of Antonio Dre'wan Jones, a 19-year-old male from Parkton, North Carolina. Jones was charged with second-degree murder on the same day of the incident. Authorities revealed that Jones and Smith were acquainted, having attended West Harnett High School together. Jones had recently moved from Harnett County to Robeson County.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but it was noted that Jones had fallen in with the wrong crowd, which may have contributed to the tragic event. Jones is currently being held at the Harnett County Detention Center without bond. The Harnett County Sheriff's Office has urged anyone with information about the crime to come forward.
