Following the incident, Kendall Rachard Thompson, a 22-year-old man from High Point, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Waseem's death. Thompson was jailed under a $1 million bond pending a court appearance. Jail records indicated that Thompson lived at the home where the incident occurred, while Waseem lived several miles away. The police interviewed people who were present at the home before announcing Thompson's arrest. The investigation revealed that Waseem was shot during an argument, and the police initially responded to an assault call before learning about the gunfire.
