Dekota Chase Smith, a 16-year-old male from Granite Falls, North Carolina, tragically passed away on April 10, 2016. Dekota was a student at South Caldwell High School and was known for his involvement in the wrestling and track teams. On the day of his death, Dekota was at his grandparents' home, engaging in a video chat with a friend via Skype. During the chat, he was showing his friend a gun when it accidentally discharged, resulting in his death.
The incident was ruled an accidental
shooting by the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office. Dekota's uncle, Gregory Johnston, recounted that Dekota was holding the gun and showing it to his friend when it went off. The friend, who was on the other end of the video chat, reported seeing the ceiling immediately after hearing the gunshot, indicating that something had gone terribly wrong.
In the aftermath of the incident, the authorities launched an investigation to determine how Dekota had gained access to the firearm. The investigation aimed to uncover whether any negligence or improper storage of the weapon had contributed to the tragic accident. Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones emphasized the importance of gun safety and the need for parents to secure their firearms to prevent such accidents from occurring.
As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with Dekota's death. The investigation findings were to be forwarded to the district attorney's office for review. The community and Dekota's school were deeply affected by the incident, with counselors and clergy providing support to grieving students and staff.
