Anthony King, a 41-year-old African American man from Roseboro, North Carolina, tragically died on July 3, 2016, as a result of injuries sustained during a chaotic incident at the Lakewood Country Club in Salemburg. The incident occurred during a private party held at the club, which was rented out for the event. Around 2:30 a.m., a fight broke out, leading to multiple injuries.
King, who was known for advocating non-violence and had hosted the party for years to inspire others to turn away from violence, attempted to break up the fight and was shot in the process. He succumbed to his injuries a few hours later at WakeMed.
Following the incident, Emmanuel Mikel Kerr, a 21-year-old from Garland, NC, was identified as the suspect in King's murder. Kerr turned himself in to authorities and was charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Additionally, two other individuals, Shantel Lenay Neal and Jauteria Shanice Faison, were arrested in connection with assaults that occurred during the altercation. Neal was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a government official, while Faison faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities have indicated that more arrests are likely as they continue to process evidence and conduct interviews. The motive for the altercation remains unclear, and the community continues to mourn the loss of Anthony King, a family man and advocate for non-violence.
