Donnell Coakley Jr., aged 3, was tragically murdered on November 7, 2014, in Chicago, Illinois. The circumstances surrounding his death revealed horrific abuse that had taken place over an extended period. Donnell's mother, Tylesha Griffin, his father, Donnell Coakley Sr., and his cousin, Dominique Lott, were charged with first-degree murder. The investigation uncovered a pattern of extreme physical abuse, with Lott admitting to hitting the child with belts, an electrical cord, and even using
her foot to stomp on him.
The abuse left Donnell Jr. with over 100 injuries across his body, including burn marks, a chipped tooth, and signs of being bound. The medical examiner noted that parts of his body were severely traumatized, with a wound on his arm showing exposed rotting muscle, which would have likely required amputation if he had survived.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) had previous contact with Griffin in 2011 for allegations of neglect. Following the tragedy, Donnell Jr.’s siblings were taken into protective custody under a DCFS-monitored safety plan. The actions of those responsible, including neglecting to call emergency services promptly, highlighted a deeply troubling case of child abuse and neglect, ultimately leading to charges of murder against all involved.
