Sebastian Unique Smith, a 26-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 18, 2016, in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 1:30 a.m., on North Allen Road, near East Nelson Avenue. Smith was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the front yard of Hope House, a community service organization located at 334 N. Allen Road.
He was immediately transported to WakeMed hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Smith's death led to the arrest of Mykevian Keyshawn Massenburg, a 19-year-old male, who was charged with first-degree murder. Massenburg, who resided in the 300 block of North Allen Road, was taken into custody by Wake Forest police on August 25, 2016. He was held at the Wake County Detention Center and made his first court appearance shortly after his arrest.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Massenburg pled guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. This agreement reduced the original charge of first-degree murder. As a result, Massenburg was sentenced to a prison term of 80 to 108 months, with credit for the time he had already served. The plea deal and sentencing were finalized in May 2018.
