Demone Nesbitt, a 23-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on May 31, 2017, in Kinston, North Carolina. The incident occurred at the Mitchell Wooten Court housing complex, where Nesbitt was shot. He succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. The Kinston Police Department quickly identified the shooting as a double homicide, with another victim, 18-year-old Donald Girtley Jr., also losing his life in the same incident.
The
investigation led to the arrest of a 15-year-old male suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age. The suspect was charged with the murders of both Nesbitt and Girtley. Authorities have indicated that the shooting was not random, although Nesbitt appeared to be an unintended target, simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The police are also exploring the possibility that these murders are connected to a series of shootings that took place in the Goldsboro area over the Memorial Day weekend.
In addition to the primary suspect, another individual, 18-year-old Nicholas Xavier Edwards, was charged with felony obstruction of justice in connection with the case.
