Nadia Amaadar Maher, a 38-year-old woman from Apex, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on November 24, 2017. The circumstances surrounding her death were deeply troubling. Nadia was found in her home with a gunshot wound to her stomach. Her husband, Michael Anthony Maher, initially claimed that the shooting was accidental, stating that the gun went off while he was checking its safety lock.
However, the investigation revealed signs of a struggle, with Nadia having bruises all over her body and scratches on her hand. Michael Maher also had visible scratches on his chest and wrist.
Further investigation uncovered a history of domestic violence. Nadia had filed a protective order against Michael in 2012, citing incidents that occurred when the couple lived in Louisiana and Florida. Relatives were aware of the long history of domestic violence, and it was suggested that the couple's daughter might have communication on her cell phone that could help explain how and why her mother was killed.
On the night of the shooting, the couple's teenage daughter initially reported to a 911 dispatcher that her younger brother had shot their mother. She later changed her story, stating that her father accidentally fired the shot. Authorities seized the teen's phone to examine the communication, but she was reportedly uncooperative.
Michael Anthony Maher was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Nadia's death. He also faced pending domestic violence charges in Louisiana, where he was accused of choking Nadia in front of their children. Additionally, Michael Maher faced charges of insurance fraud and theft in separate cases in Louisiana.
