Jaylin Jones, a 25-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on May 12, 2018, during a Mother's Day cookout in Henderson, North Carolina. The event was organized by Tau Strong, who invited Jones, the father of her stillborn child, to the gathering. The cookout took a deadly turn when an argument broke out between Strong's live-in boyfriend, 21-year-old Scottie Lee Bates II, and Jones. Bates, who was reportedly intoxicated and upset, shot Jones during the altercation.
