Devonte Cheek, a 24-year-old man from Henderson, NC, was shot and killed on October 30, 2021, outside a Shell gas station on the corner of N.C. Highway 39 and Thomas Road. According to reports, Cheek was exiting his vehicle to enter the gas station when an individual in a dark-colored sedan opened fire and fled the scene. Cheek was pronounced dead at Maria Parham Hospital, while another individual with gunshot wounds was treated and expected to recover.
The Vance County Sheriff’s
Office, with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation, launched an investigation into the incident. On November 19, 2021, Tiara Seaward turned herself into the Vance County Sheriff’s Office and was taken into custody in connection with Cheek's murder. Seaward was processed into the Vance County Detention Facility under no bond, and the investigation continued to unfold.
As of January 7, 2025, the case remains under investigation, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. The tragic death of Devonte Cheek has left the community seeking justice and answers, as the legal proceedings against Seaward progress.
