Jonathan Armando Garcia, a 16-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on May 25, 2018, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Garcia was a sophomore at Quality Education Academy and had aspirations of enlisting in the Army. On the night of his death, Garcia went out with a friend, and despite his mother's attempts to reach him via text, he did not respond.
The events leading to his death unfolded during a drug deal that escalated into a violent confrontation.
The altercation occurred at a residence on Regalwood Drive, where Garcia was found unresponsive near the road with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The police investigation revealed that the fight broke out during the drug deal, leading to the fatal shooting.
Two 17-year-old suspects, Abdul Azizhanif Sears and Tylen Jibreel Sears, both from Winston-Salem, were charged with first-degree murder in connection with Garcia's death. Abdul Sears was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the fight, while Tylen Sears was not injured. Abdul Sears was arrested after being released from the hospital, and both suspects were jailed without bond.
The case drew significant attention, with Garcia's mother expressing her anguish over the loss of her son and the strangers who showed up at the hospital asking about him.
