Alva "AJ" Paisley Oxendine, a 5-year-old boy from Red Springs, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on June 5, 2019. AJ was caught in the crossfire during a shootout that erupted from a fight between multiple individuals. The incident occurred while AJ was sitting in the back of his mother's vehicle, along with his brother. The two groups involved in the altercation had fought earlier in the day and agreed to meet again at a location on Highway 72 West to continue their dispute.
During the shootout, AJ was struck by a bullet and was subsequently transported by personal vehicle to the Red Springs Police Department before being taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Robeson County Sheriff's Office and Juvenile Division launched an investigation into AJ's death. The community of Red Springs was deeply affected by the loss, with many expressing their grief and calling for an end to gun violence in the area. AJ's school, Peterson Elementary, also mourned his passing and offered support to his family and friends.
In the aftermath of the incident, seven individuals were arrested and charged in connection with the fight that led to AJ's death. Delicia Dantionette Galbreath, 33, of Red Springs, who was identified as AJ's mother, was charged with felony riot, felony inciting to riot, and disorderly conduct. Bella Maquai Sampson, 18, of Maxton, faced charges of felony riot, simple affray, disorderly conduct, and assault and battery. Percy Ethan-Todd Brooks, 19, of Lumberton, was charged with felony riot, felony inciting to riot, and disorderly conduct. Hailey Brewer, 19, of Red Springs, faced charges of felony riot, simple affray, disorderly conduct, and assault and battery. Courtney Rose Carter was charged with felony riot and felony inciting to riot. Kira Brewer, 20, of Red Springs, faced charges of felony riot, felony inciting to riot, and disorderly conduct. Donavan Trevale Locklear was charged with felony riot, felony inciting to riot, injury to personal property, and disorderly conduct. Locklear, who was already in custody, was later charged with second-degree murder in relation to AJ's death.
The investigation into AJ's death remains ongoing, with authorities determined to bring all those involved in the incident to justice. The tragic loss of such a young life has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the urgent need to address and prevent gun violence in the area.
