On the morning of August 21, 2019, at approximately 7:31 a.m., the Jacksonville Police Department responded to a report of a shooting and found DaShaun lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate efforts of first responders to perform CPR, DaShaun was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into DaShaun's death led to the arrest of Tyquan Sykree Hayes, a 24-year-old African American male from Jacksonville, North Carolina. Hayes was located at a hotel in Wilmington, North Carolina, and was taken into custody without incident by the Jacksonville Police Department, with assistance from the Wilmington Police Department, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Hayes was charged with murder in connection to DaShaun's death and was held in the Onslow County Jail without bond.
Additionally, Mieonna Diasia Jackson, a 21-year-old African American female from Jacksonville, was charged with harboring a fugitive for her role in assisting Hayes. Jackson was found with Hayes at the hotel and was subsequently arrested and held under a $2,500 bond at the Onslow County Jail.
