Jaqualus Deontray Glover, a 20-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on March 19, 2020, in Gastonia, North Carolina. Glover died from a gunshot wound near the intersection of Yellowstone and Brownstone courts, a neighborhood located north of I-85 between Modena Street and North New Hope Road. The incident marked Gaston County's first homicide of 2020.
Two suspects were charged with first-degree murder in connection with Glover's death.
Hafees Yhanjuan Adams, a 22-year-old African American male, and Justin Isaiah Bess, a 20-year-old African American male, were both arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Bess and Glover were once friends, and the shooting occurred after a heated conversation between the two. Bess, who had a substantial criminal history, was on post-release supervision at the time of the shooting.
During the trial, Bess admitted to shooting Glover, claiming he believed Glover had a gun in his pocket. Bess was ultimately found guilty of felony murder and felony firearm possession by a felon. He was sentenced to life in prison for the crime. Adams, who had been sought by police for several weeks, was also charged and remains in Gaston County Jail without bond.
