Brittney Nicole Leftridge, a 31-year-old woman, was found deceased on July 1, 2020, at a residence on Racquet Club Drive near Cashiers, North Carolina. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a gunshot wound and discovered Leftridge's body at the scene. Leftridge, who lived at the residence with Grant Alexander Higgs, had suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

Grant Alexander Higgs, a 42-year-old man, was subsequently arrested and indicted on first-degree murder charges in connection with Leftridge's death. At the time of his arrest, Higgs was residing in Nashville, Tennessee, but he had previously lived in St. Louis, Missouri, and Cashiers, North Carolina. Higgs was taken into custody by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center under a $5 million bond.
The case has been under investigation by Lt. John A. Beegle, the primary investigator for the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
