He and his wife Sandra Smith Hoyle, 72, were found dead at their home in Bridgeton, NC, by deputies who responded to a welfare check. The investigation revealed that their grandson, Michael Tanner Norris, 30, was the suspect. Norris was charged with two counts of murder after allegedly shooting his grandparents with a high-powered rifle. He then stole their car and fled the scene. Norris was later arrested without incident in Belhaven, NC, and was found to be under the influence of something at the time of his arrest.
The motive behind the murders was believed to be drug-related, according to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Chip Hughes expressed sorrow over the incident, noting the devastating impact drugs can have on individuals and their families.
