Jyasin Kasion Dearmon, a 20-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on January 26, 2021, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jyasin Dearmon succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the other victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department launched a homicide investigation immediately following the incident.
On January 27, 2021, CMPD officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle of interest related to the murder. During the stop, they arrested Jawonn McIlwain, a 22-year-old African American male, who was subsequently charged with carrying a concealed weapon, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and murder. The investigation revealed that McIlwain was involved in the shooting that led to Jyasin Dearmon's death.
Further investigations led to the arrest of three additional suspects: Tiberius Rashayn Lee, an 18-year-old African American male; Emanuel Cuffie, a 20-year-old African American male; and a 17-year-old juvenile whose identity was not disclosed due to their age. All four suspects were charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and murder. The arrests were made after CMPD officers gathered sufficient evidence linking the suspects to the crime.
