The incident occurred in the Duffyfield neighborhood, where multiple gunshots were reported by several 911 callers. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Donnie Smith and another individual suffering from gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, Donnie Smith succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The New Bern Police Department confirmed that Donnie Smith's death was the second fatal
shooting in the city that year. The incident took place on Raleigh Street near Myrtle and Mechanic streets. Witnesses recounted hearing multiple gunshots, and some bullets even hit nearby homes. A maintenance worker in the area counted nine bullet holes, and another resident reported that his fiancée was struck in the face while they were in bed. The fiancée survived and was recovering at home.
The police investigation revealed that the shooting was an isolated incident, and two arrests were made in connection with the case.
