Kendrick Eugene Knight, a 26-year-old male, was found dead on May 31, 2021, in Huntersville, North Carolina. His body was discovered in a wooded area near his home in a small mobile home community. Knight had been both shot and stabbed, making his death a particularly violent one. The sequence of events began when Huntersville police responded
to a call for assistance at the home of Michael Eugene Elliot, a 58-year-old friend of Knight's, who was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The next day, during the investigation into Elliot's death, officers discovered Knight's body in the nearby wooded area. The following day, a third victim, 41-year-old Phillip Daryl Jewell, another friend of Knight's, was found shot to death in his home within the same community. The suspect in these murders, 21-year-old Michael Jacob Matocha, was also found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Huntersville Police Sergeant Odette Saglimbeni stated that Knight was the connection between all four individuals. Knight knew the suspect, Matocha, as well as the other two victims, but Matocha did not know Elliot or Jewell. The investigation revealed that all three murders and Matocha's suicide likely took place on the same night. However, the police have not disclosed a possible motive for the killings, and friends and neighbors of the victims have also remained silent on the matter.
The tight-knit mobile home community in Huntersville was left in shock by the tragic events. Residents described Knight as a friendly and respectful individual who was well-liked by those who knew him. The police faced criticism for not informing the community about the investigation until a news conference was held several days later. Sergeant Saglimbeni explained that the situation was continuously evolving, making it difficult to provide timely updates.
