On the night of June 21,
2021, Dexter was shot multiple times outside a home on Granada Street, just north of Carrier Park and the French Broad River. The Asheville Police Department received a 911 call reporting the shooting around 9:45 p.m. Dexter was in critical condition when the police arrived and was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. This incident marked Asheville's fifth homicide of 2021.
The police investigation quickly identified Amya Alexis Collington as a suspect in Dexter's murder. Collington, a 22-year-old woman, turned herself into the Buncombe County jail on June 22, 2021, and was held without bond. The case against Collington went to trial, where she faced a first-degree murder charge, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment under North Carolina law. During the trial, it was revealed that the altercation between Dexter and Collington stemmed from a dispute between their younger relatives at a playground.
Collington's defense argued that she acted in self-defense, claiming that Dexter had brought an AR-15 to the scene and that she feared for her life. The jury deliberated for more than a day before reaching a verdict. On August 17, 2022, Collington was acquitted of the murder charge, with the jury finding her not guilty.
