Stephen Henderson, a 21-year-old African American male, was killed in a shooting on the afternoon of December 1, 2015, in Detroit, Michigan. The violent incident occurred outside the Hayes Troester Market on Hayes Street near Houston Whittier on the city's east side. Henderson was sitting in a vehicle with three minors—a 13-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy—whom he had reportedly just picked up from school.
Two gunmen approached the car in the parking lot and opened fire. Henderson attempted to flee the ambush, driving the vehicle across the street before crashing into a vacant building. He and the 13-year-old female passenger in the front seat were fatally shot during the attack. The other two children, who were riding on the hood of the car at the time of the shooting, were thrown from the vehicle; the 14-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition, while the 7-year-old boy was listed in stable condition.
Following a federal investigation under the "Detroit One" initiative, authorities identified the perpetrators as members of the "6 Mile Chedda Grove" street gang, a violent organization operating on Detroit's east side. In 2016, federal indictments were unsealed charging Edwin Lamont Mills and Carlo Dajuan Wilson with the murders. The indictment alleged that the shooting was committed to maintain and increase their position in the racketeering enterprise. Both men were charged with murder in aid of racketeering and other firearm-related offenses for the deaths of the 21-year-old driver and the 13-year-old passenger.
