In the early morning hours of February 20, 2012, the life of nine-month-old Delric Miller was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire on Greenview Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The infant was inside his home with about ten other people when an assailant, or assailants, unleashed a barrage of at least 30 to 40 shots from what police believe was an AK-47 assault rifle into the residence.
Delric was the only person struck by the gunfire and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The senseless act of violence sent shockwaves through the community and left a grieving family searching for answers. Investigators initially labeled the shooting as gang-related, suggesting that someone in the house was the intended target. Federal agents were brought in to assist the Detroit Police Department in the investigation. However, Delric's grandmother, Cynthia Wilkins, offered a different and equally heartbreaking narrative. She claimed the shooting stemmed from a dispute over seating at a baby shower the previous day. According to Wilkins, an argument at the event escalated, leading to her daughter being followed and ultimately their home being targeted.
In the wake of the shooting, police identified a 'person of interest' who was taken into custody on an unrelated matter, but no arrests were ever made directly in connection with Delric's murder. Community groups and law enforcement officials made public pleas for information, with a reward being offered for any tips that could lead to an arrest. Despite these efforts and the passage of time, the case remains unsolved, and the individuals responsible for the death of Delric Miller have never been brought to justice. The investigation remains open, a cold case that continues to haunt the city of Detroit.
