Dekoven Kali Ware, an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on July 7, 2021, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred late at night on Turtle Neck Lane, where officers responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Dekoven Kali Ware was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.

The investigation into Dekoven Kali Ware's death led to the arrest of 19-year-old Hakim Leonard Eads. Eads was charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The arrest was made possible through the efforts of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and assistance from the community. Eads was interviewed by CMPD detectives before being transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
