On a mild December evening in Morrow, Georgia, 15-year-old Laila Reneé Harris, an African American female, was looking forward to a night of fun at a high school party. Hundreds of teenagers from various metro Atlanta high schools had gathered at an event hall on Citizens Parkway on December 3, 2022, for what should have been a carefree celebration. Laila, a student at Sprayberry High School who was originally from St. Louis, was among them, simply enjoying the company of her peers.
The festive atmosphere of the party took a dark turn when an individual was reportedly escorted out of the gathering. In a senseless act of violence, this person later returned with an accomplice. Around 11 p.m., multiple gunshots were fired into the building, causing chaos and panic as the crowd of teenagers scrambled for safety. In the midst of the mayhem, as she tried to flee, Laila was struck by a bullet near the entrance of the event space. She was the sole fatality in the shooting.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Clayton County Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Authorities believe that Laila was not the intended target of the shooting. Despite the large number of witnesses present at the party, the investigation has been met with challenges. No suspects have been officially named or arrested in connection with Laila's death. Investigators have released a still photo and surveillance video of a person of interest, described as wearing a skull cap or beanie, a puffer jacket, and dark-colored pants, in the hopes that the public can help identify him. A reward of up to $2,000 has been offered by Atlanta CrimeStoppers for any information that leads to an arrest. Police have repeatedly urged anyone who was at the party or who has any knowledge of the incident to come forward to help bring justice to Laila and her grieving family.
