Donna Blackmon, a 61-year-old woman from Winston-Salem, NC, tragically died on August 22, 2021. She was killed by a stray bullet while sleeping in her bed next to her husband of 20 years. The bullet came through the bedroom wall during an early morning shooting incident. Despite life-saving measures by the police, Donna succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation led to the arrest of two teenagers, Ezra Houston Yeary, 14, and Omarion Tremaine Davis, 15. They were charged with murder.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that the teenagers were involved in a drive-by shooting targeting rival gang members. As they fired an AR-15 rifle, several shots missed the intended target and struck Donna's home. One of these rounds fatally wounded Donna while she was asleep.
In May 2024, both teenagers were sentenced for their roles in Donna's death. Yeary received a sentence of 18 to 22 and 1/2 years, while Davis was sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison. The judge presiding over the case, Jason Ramey, emphasized the senseless nature of the crime and the impact on Donna's family and community.
Donna's husband, Lorenza Blackmon, expressed his grief and frustration over the loss of his wife. He felt helpless as he was unable to save her despite his years of training as a veteran. The community and law enforcement officials also condemned the violence and called for collective efforts to address the underlying social issues contributing to such incidents.
