The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Auto Drive, near several local businesses, including Luna Night Club, Flow Volkswagen of Durham, Alpaca Peruvian Charcoal Chicken, and the tractor shop Quality Equipment. The shooting resulted in the death of Daniel Slack at the scene, while two other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
The Durham Police Department stated that the shooting did not appear to be a random incident.
Following the incident, Armani Walker, a 25-year-old male from Durham, was arrested by the U.S. Marshal Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force on July 1, 2022. Walker was charged with one count of murder, attempted first-degree murder, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was placed in the Durham County Jail without bond. The investigation revealed that the shooting was not random, and authorities urged anyone with information to contact Investigator Cristaldi or CrimeStoppers.
The tragic event was one of two deadly triple shootings that occurred in Durham on the same day. The other shooting took place on West Woodcroft Parkway, resulting in the death of Tylen Wesley Baldwin, a 21-year-old male. The Durham Police Department reported an increase in homicides with firearms in the city, with 23 homicides recorded by June 25, 2022, compared to 21 homicides in the previous year. The police chief highlighted the challenges faced by the department in solving these cases, with only one homicide solved in the first three months of 2022.
