On June 25, 2022, Q’arysnn Maske, a one-year-old girl from Charlotte, NC, tragically lost her life in a shooting incident at an apartment complex on Wallace Road off Monroe Road. The incident occurred after 8 p.m. when a gun, which was found by one of the children present, accidentally discharged. Q’arysnn was holding her seven-year-old brother when the gun went off, hitting both of them. Q’arysnn was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries, while her brother sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department conducted a death investigation into the incident. However, no criminal charges have been filed as of now. The young girl's mother, Shaqua Maske, described Q’arysnn as an old soul with so much love to give. She expressed her devastation and the trauma of witnessing such a tragic event but emphasized that anger wouldn't bring her baby back. Instead, she focused on being strong for her three other children and planning a peaceful funeral for Q’arysnn.
The community in southeast Charlotte has been deeply affected by this tragedy, with friends and family mourning the loss of the "perfect little girl" who was full of love and affection. Shaqua Maske called for respect and peace to honor her daughter's memory.
As of now, there have been no arrests or suspects identified in connection with the incident. The investigation remains ongoing, but it is being treated as a tragic accident rather than a deliberate act of violence.
