On July 24, 1900, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Captain John Day of the New Orleans Police Department was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend a suspect named Robert Charles. Charles, an African American male, had been involved in a prior altercation with police officers, during which he and Officer August T.
