Sergeant Gabriel J. Porteous of the New Orleans Police Department was shot and killed on July 27, 1900, while attempting to apprehend a violent suspect. The suspect, who had murdered two police officers three days earlier, opened fire on Sergeant Porteous and Corporal John Lally as they tried to take him into custody.
