In the summer of 1900, a manhunt for a violent fugitive in New Orleans culminated in the death of Sergeant Gabriel J. Porteous. The events leading to this tragic conclusion began on July 23rd, when three police officers approached a man who, without warning, drew a handgun and opened fire, wounding one of the officers. This act of violence set off a chain of events that would leave multiple officers dead.
The following day, authorities tracked the suspect to his residence on Fourth Street. As officers entered the home, the man fired upon them with a. 38 caliber Winchester rifle, killing Captain John Day and Patrolman Peter Lamb. Despite the house being surrounded, the suspect managed to escape, leading to an intensified city-wide search.
On July 27th, investigators received a crucial tip that the fugitive was hiding in a house in the 1200 block of Saratoga Street. As law enforcement attempted to take him into custody, the suspect once again opened fire. In this exchange, Sergeant Gabe Porteous and Corporal John Lally were both fatally shot. The gunman then barricaded himself inside the home, prolonging the standoff. In response, other officers, including Keeper Van Kuren, strategically positioned themselves in a nearby house at 1209 Rampart Street, which offered a clear view of the barricaded location. The violent rampage of the suspect ultimately claimed the lives of four dedicated officers of the New Orleans Police Department.
