Paul Arlynn Persigo, aged 33, was a male officer of the New Orleans Police Department. He tragically lost his life on January 7, 1973, during a violent incident known as the Howard Johnson's tragedy. Over a seven-day period starting on December 31, 1972, a lone gunman named Mark J. Essex, who was a member of the Black Panthers, waged war on the New Orleans Police Department and innocent civilians. Essex engaged in a series of shootings and set fires at a local hotel.
