In the line of duty, Agent John Kahl, Sr., a White male, met an untimely and violent end on June 4, 1980. A veteran of the United States Navy who had served in the Vietnam War, Kahl had been with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office for 13 years, building a life dedicated to service and the protection of his community. On that fateful day, he was part of a team executing a search warrant at a residence in St.
Mary Parish, an action born from an ongoing investigation into illegal drug activities.
The operation took a tragic turn when a suspect inside the residence, without warning, thrust the barrel of a. 44 magnum revolver through a crack in the door and fired a single, fatal shot. The bullet struck Agent Kahl in the head, killing him instantly. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the other officers on the scene returned fire, and the suspect responsible for Agent Kahl's death was shot and killed.
Agent John Kahl, Sr. was survived by his wife and two children. His ultimate sacrifice has not been forgotten. In his memory, the John Kahl, Sr. Award of Excellence is presented to the law enforcement cadet with the highest academic scores at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office Regional Training Academy. Further honoring his legacy, the Sheriff's Gun Range was renamed the "John I. Kahl Training Center" in 2020.
