Nhirobi Hakeem Dewey, a 21-year-old African American man from Morgan City, Louisiana, was fatally shot on the morning of March 2, 2018. The incident, which occurred around 9:24 a.m. in the area of Maine Street, was the result of a narcotics transaction that escalated into an attempted robbery. Dewey was discovered by responding officers with a single gunshot wound and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
According to the Morgan City Police Department, their investigation revealed that Dewey, along with another individual, Nyjul Hillebrandt, was involved in a drug deal with Dasmine Miller and Brian Mitchell. During the course of the transaction, Dewey allegedly produced a handgun in an attempt to rob Miller and Mitchell. In response, Miller, who was 18 at the time, also drew a firearm and shot Dewey. It is reported that Miller continued to fire his weapon, also striking and wounding the 21-year-old Hillebrandt.
Following the shooting, investigators were led to a hotel on Brashear Avenue by witnesses, where they located and detained Miller and the 24-year-old Mitchell, both residents of Gray, Louisiana. Hillebrandt, from Morgan City, was later found at a hospital in Terrebonne Parish receiving treatment for his non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was also taken into custody. A search of the various crime scenes led to the recovery of the suspected weapons used in the incident, as well as marijuana and other drug paraphernalia.
As a result of the investigation, Dasmine Miller was arrested on charges of manslaughter, attempted second-degree murder, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, violation of a drug-free zone, and illegal carrying of weapons. Brian Mitchell faced charges of principal to manslaughter, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and violation of a drug-free zone. Nyjul Hillebrandt was charged with theft of less than $1,000 and obstruction of justice for his alleged role in taking items from Miller and Mitchell and attempting to conceal evidence.
