Alva Ray Simmons, a 53-year-old African American male, was a dedicated police officer with the New Orleans Police Department. On March 18, 1985, Officer Simmons responded to a burglary in progress at a home on Short Street in the Carrollton area. While approaching the scene, he was shot in the chin by a .357 caliber revolver fired by an individual inside the home. The bullet damaged his vocal cord and severed an artery.
