On an autumn evening in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer, 32-year-old Billy Wayne McIntosh, was tragically cut short. It was October 1, 1997, and McIntosh, a male deputy with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, was off-duty. He was approached by an individual seeking help for a woman who was being assaulted by her former husband.
Driven by a sense of duty, McIntosh responded to the plea for assistance.
Upon arriving at the residence, he was met with sudden and deadly violence. As he knocked on the door, he was shot in the face at point-blank range. The shot proved to be fatal, severing his brain stem. The man who fired the weapon was identified as Woody Hamilton. Prior to shooting the deputy, Hamilton had also murdered his ex-wife, Rhonda Hamilton, inside the home. The devastating events of that night did not end there, as another responding deputy was injured during the ensuing pursuit of Hamilton.
Following the violent rampage, Woody Hamilton was apprehended and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Deputy Billy Wayne McIntosh and Rhonda Hamilton, along with one count of attempted first-degree murder. The legal process that followed found Hamilton responsible for his actions. He was convicted on both counts of first-degree murder. The jury, however, could not come to a unanimous decision regarding the death penalty. As a result, Woodrow 'Woody' Hamilton was sentenced to serve two consecutive life sentences in prison, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the brutal slayings.
