Deputy Sheriff Alan Inzer, aged 43, was shot and killed on January 25, 2007, in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. He was off-duty when he encountered several armed burglary suspects on Ryan Street in Lake Charles. Deputy Inzer pursued the suspects in his vehicle and then on foot to Richard Street. During the pursuit, one of the suspects opened fire, striking Deputy Inzer in the leg and side, and knocking him to the ground. The suspect then shot him twice in the chest, fatally wounding him.
