Detective John Russell Smith, aged 40, was a dedicated officer with the Bastrop Police Department in Louisiana. On August 10, 2007, while responding to a call at a local hotel to investigate a theft, Detective Smith and his colleague, Detective Charles Wilson, encountered two murder suspects from Texas who were hiding in the hotel.
