On a summer afternoon in Bastrop, Louisiana, the community was shattered by a sudden act of violence that claimed the life of two of its own. Detective John Russell Smith, a 40-year-old man and an 18-year veteran of the Bastrop Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on August 10, 2007. He and his partner, Detective Charles 'Chuck' Wilson, were responding to a local hotel to investigate a theft, a seemingly routine call that would soon escalate into a tragedy.
