In the late summer of 2007, a dedicated 34-year-old male detective with the Bastrop Police Department, Charles “Chuck” Wilson, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. On Friday, August 10, 2007, Detective Wilson and his partner, Detective John Smith, were following up on a theft investigation at a hotel in Bastrop's main square. The two officers were unaware that their routine investigation was about to place them in the path of dangerous fugitives.
Inside the hotel, two
suspects wanted for a murder in Texas were hiding. When Detectives Wilson and Smith arrived to conduct their follow-up, a violent confrontation erupted. A gun battle ensued, and in the exchange of fire, both Detective Wilson and Detective Smith were fatally wounded. One of the murder suspects was also killed during the shootout. In the chaotic aftermath, a female suspect, also wanted in connection with the Texas murder, managed to escape. The violence of that day also left two paramedics, who had rushed to the scene to aid the fallen officers, wounded.
A manhunt was launched for the female suspect, and she was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal's office in Houston, Texas, two days later, on August 12th. The investigation also led to the arrest of three other individuals who had assisted the female suspect in her attempt to flee. In January 2009, the now 26-year-old female suspect faced justice. She was convicted on federal weapons charges and sentenced to 28 years in federal prison. Shortly after, for her role in the murders of the two detectives, she was convicted on two counts of second-degree murder and received two consecutive life sentences. Detective Wilson, a veteran of the Bastrop Police Department for 11 years, was survived by his wife, two daughters, parents, brother, and sister.
