In the quiet community of Keithville, Louisiana, a tragic and violent event unfolded on August 17, 2010, resulting in the death of 18-year-old Jarquis Adams, an African American male, along with his two brothers. The three siblings, Jeremiah Adams, 20, and the youngest, 13-year-old Jean Adams, were together in their Chevrolet Malibu, pulling into the driveway of a residence on Keatchie Marshall Road around 10 p.m.
Their arrival was met with a sudden and brutal assault that would cut their lives short.
The residence belonged to the girlfriend of 33-year-old Marcus Donte' Reed, who was frequently at the home. Reed harbored the mistaken belief that the Adams brothers were responsible for the burglary of his girlfriend's home and the theft of a video game system. This unfounded suspicion allegedly fueled his violent actions that evening. According to eyewitnesses, as Jarquis Adams stepped out of the car, Reed emerged from the nearby woods and opened fire with an assault-style weapon without warning.
Jarquis was struck by the initial gunfire and fell to the ground. Reed then proceeded to circle the vehicle, relentlessly firing into it where Jeremiah and Jean remained. In a final act of brutality, Reed returned to Jarquis's motionless body and shot him again. When the shooting ceased, Jarquis had sustained two gunshot wounds, one to his chest and a fatal close-range shot to his forehead. His brother Jeremiah was shot seven times, and young Jean was shot five times. Following the horrific attack, Reed threatened two individuals who had witnessed the event, ordering them to dispose of the bodies. They managed to place Jarquis's body in the trunk of the car before fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement arrived to a grim scene with a bullet-riddled vehicle and the bodies of the three brothers. The investigation quickly led to Marcus Donte' Reed, who was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Despite the motive being an alleged burglary, investigators found no evidence linking the Adams brothers to the crime. Reed was subsequently convicted for the triple murder and sentenced to death. The Louisiana Supreme Court later affirmed his conviction and sentence. More than a decade later, a judge signed a death warrant for Marcus Reed, setting an execution date for June of 2025.
