In the small community of Reserve, Louisiana, the life of 34-year-old Anthony 'Lil Man Turk' Young was abruptly cut short on the evening of Wednesday, February 20, 2013. St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the 100 block of East 24th Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male victim who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. This man was soon identified as Anthony Young, a resident of Reserve.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking the fourth homicide in the parish for that year.
The investigation into Young's death moved swiftly, and within a day, two arrests were made in connection with the fatal shooting. On Thursday, February 21, 2013, the St. John Parish Sheriff's Office took two men into custody. Kenneth Edward Hicks III, 49 years old at the time and a resident of LaPlace, was booked on the charge of first-degree murder. Dontae Samuel Bond, then 31 and from Los Angeles, California, was booked with principal to first-degree murder.
Following the arrests, the legal process began to unfold. In February 2016, a jury found Kenneth Hicks, then 51, guilty of the second-degree murder of Anthony Young. The three-day trial concluded with the conviction, and prosecutors detailed that Hicks had fatally shot Young at a local establishment named Alex's Sports Bar in Reserve. For his crime, Kenneth Hicks faced a mandatory sentence of life in prison at hard labor, without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
