On the evening of April 24, 2013, a trip to a Walmart in Port Allen, Louisiana, turned fatal for 36-year-old Leon Banks. Banks, a male resident of Plaquemine, had driven his white BMW into the store's parking lot accompanied by two other individuals for what was later described as a drug deal.
Shortly after their arrival around 8:45 p.m., a dark-colored Honda CR-V pulled up alongside Banks's vehicle. Banks then got out of his car and entered the back seat of the CR-V.
Moments later, the sound of a gunshot erupted from within the Honda. As Banks attempted to exit the vehicle, he was struck by the bullet and collapsed in the parking lot.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led to the arrest of Roosevelt D. Jones. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Leon Banks's death. Following a jury trial, Jones was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. For his role in the killing, the court sentenced him to thirty-five years of imprisonment at hard labor.
