In May of 2014, the community of Mansfield, Louisiana, was shaken by the tragic death of 39-year-old Gwen Cox Salley. A few days before her death, her estranged husband, Michael Salley, had been arrested after holding Gwen and their seven-year-old daughter at gunpoint and threatening to kill his wife. Despite the severity of these charges, he was released on a $50,000 bond.

Michael Salley ambushed Gwen at their daughter's daycare center. While a daycare worker managed to protect the child, Michael forced Gwen into her vehicle and fled. A witness followed them and alerted the authorities. The chase came to a tragic end on a secluded road, where deputies heard gunshots. They discovered that Michael Salley had shot and killed Gwen before taking his own life. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
