On a December day in 2014, the life of 51-year-old Raymond Keith Martinez came to a tragic end outside a gas station in West Monroe, Louisiana. The white male was fatally shot on December 4, 2014, in an encounter with a local police officer.
The incident unfolded when West Monroe Police Officer Jody Ledoux responded to a call from the gas station's owner, who reported that Martinez was behaving in an unruly manner inside the store. An argument ensued between Officer Ledoux and Martinez. According to the police report, Ledoux stated that he saw Martinez reach into his jacket, which prompted the officer to draw his weapon.
The situation escalated when Martinez, allegedly disobeying the officer's commands to show his hands, reached for an object in a nearby trashcan. Officer Ledoux, claiming he believed the object was a gun, fired his weapon multiple times. Four bullets struck Martinez, who was later pronounced dead at Glenwood Regional Medical Center. However, employees at the gas station reported that the object in the trashcan appeared to be a cell phone. Following the shooting, a jury found Officer Jody Ledoux not guilty of negligent homicide.
