In the early hours of Christmas Day in 2014, a dispute inside a Hahnville, Louisiana bar tragically escalated, ending the life of 23-year-old David Scott. A Black male from Houston, Scott was at Butt Cuts Bar on Joe Louis Lane when an argument erupted with another man over a woman. That man, later identified as Larry C. Thompson, 36, of Boutte, pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking Scott multiple times.
When St.
Charles Parish Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of gunshots at approximately 12:30 a.m., they discovered Scott deceased on the floor of the establishment. Another man was also injured in the shooting, having sustained a gunshot wound to his foot. Through their investigation, detectives quickly identified Thompson as the suspect, learning that the motive stemmed from a disagreement concerning his former girlfriend.
A warrant was issued for Thompson's arrest on charges of second-degree murder and aggravated battery. With the assistance of U.S. Marshals, law enforcement located and apprehended him at an apartment complex in Kenner where he was hiding.
In July 2017, a St. Charles Parish jury found Larry Thompson guilty of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence for the murder charge. Additionally, he received a concurrent 40-year sentence for obstruction of justice.
