In the late afternoon of August 26, 2015, the community of Sunset, Louisiana, was irrevocably altered by a tragic sequence of events that resulted in the death of 51-year-old Black/African American male, Police Officer Henry Andres Nelson. A 13-year veteran of the Sunset Police Department, Nelson was responding to a domestic disturbance call on Anna Street at approximately 3:00 p.m.
The situation he was walking into was far more volatile than a standard dispute, as three women at the residence had been stabbed by a male suspect.
Upon his arrival, Officer Nelson was immediately confronted by the armed assailant. The suspect, Harrison Riley, had forcibly taken a handgun from one of the female victims, who tragically did not survive her injuries. Without hesitation, Riley opened fire on Officer Nelson, striking him. Despite being critically wounded, Officer Nelson was airlifted to a nearby hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The loss of the dedicated officer sent shockwaves through the small, close-knit six-person police department and the wider Sunset community.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. His escape was short-lived, however, as he crashed his car into a nearby gas station. There, he barricaded himself inside the establishment, initiating a tense standoff with law enforcement that lasted for several hours. A SWAT team was ultimately dispatched to the scene and successfully apprehended Riley. In the aftermath of the incident, another of the stabbing victims, identified as Shamika Johnson, also passed away from her injuries.
Harrison Riley, who was 36 years old at the time and had an extensive criminal record, faced multiple serious charges for his actions on that fateful day. On February 24, 2016, justice was served when he was convicted on two counts of murder for the deaths of Officer Henry Nelson and Shamika Johnson. In addition to the murder convictions, he was also found guilty on two counts of attempted murder for the attacks on the other two women. As a result of his convictions, Harrison Riley was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
