In the spring of 2016, a domestic dispute in Sulphur, Louisiana, escalated into a tragic murder-suicide, leaving a community in shock and a young child without her parents. Brandi McAdams, a 33-year-old female, was shot and killed by her estranged husband, Cody A. McAdams, on April 28, 2016. The violent encounter unfolded in the community of Carlyss, south of Sulphur.
Leading up to the fatal day, there had been a history of domestic violence.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office had investigated several domestic abuse allegations made by Brandi against her husband in the months prior to her death. She had reported an incident as recently as the night before she was killed.
On that Thursday morning, deputies were responding to calls of a burglary and trespassing in the area. They discovered Cody McAdams, 38, in a pasture behind the home of Brandi's parents, where she and her daughter had been staying. He was holding Brandi and their daughter hostage. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, Cody McAdams shot his estranged wife and then opened fire on the deputies, striking one of their vehicles three times.
As deputies returned fire, striking him in the arm, Cody McAdams turned the gun on himself. Brandi McAdams was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was transported to a local hospital where he was also pronounced dead. The coroner later confirmed that his death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The couple's child, who was present during the horrific event, was physically unharmed and placed in the care of relatives.
