In the early morning hours of September 29, 2016, a confrontation in the 9th Ward of New Orleans turned fatal for 53-year-old Benny Weary. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. in the 1900 block of Gallier Street, where a homeowner, 73-year-old Abraham Venson, discovered two men in his garage.

According to police reports, the two men fled from the garage, and as they were running away, Venson opened fire. Weary was struck by the gunfire and was subsequently taken to the hospital in critical ...
