After a morning of hunting, the boys began shooting a. 22 rifle at targets under Liebkemann's supervision.
In a devastating turn of events, a bullet ricocheted off a target and struck Liebkemann in the upper chest. Emergency responders, including the Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Offices and the U.S. Coast Guard, were dispatched to the scene. A Coast Guard helicopter airlifted Liebkemann to University Medical Center in New Orleans.
