In the late hours of a February night in Hammond, Louisiana, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of an apartment complex, leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. Maurice Lloyd, a 22-year-old male, was found deceased by Tangipahoa Parish sheriff's deputies shortly after they responded to reports of a shooting on Woodlands Drive around 12:30 a.m. on February 21, 2017.
Neighbors had alerted authorities after hearing several gunshots echo through the area.
The investigation into the homicide revealed a complex series of events leading up to the fatal encounter. Earlier that evening, on February 20, 2017, Maurice Lloyd Jr. and his cousin, Devonte West, were involved in a drug transaction outside of West's residence. The transaction took a violent turn when they were ambushed in a shooting. While West survived the attack, Lloyd was fatally wounded. The incident drew the attention of law enforcement not only to the homicide but also to the underlying criminal activity.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a search of Devonte West's home uncovered approximately two ounces of heroin and multiple firearms, leading to his indictment on federal drug and gun charges. West, 21 at the time, eventually pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. However, the pursuit of justice for Maurice Lloyd's death continued on a separate track.
Three years after the fatal shooting, a resolution was reached in the case. In February 2020, Kareem Graham, then 23, of Tickfaw, pleaded no contest to a charge of manslaughter for his role in the death of Maurice Lloyd Jr. As a result of his plea, Graham was sentenced to 25 years with the Department of Corrections. The sentence was to be served without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension, bringing a definitive, albeit somber, conclusion to the investigation into the violent death of Maurice Lloyd.
