In the early moments of October 13, 2017, New Orleans Police Officer Marcus McNeil, a 30-year-old male, was on a routine patrol with three other officers in New Orleans East. Shortly after midnight, near the intersection of Tara Lane and Lake Forest Boulevard, the officers noticed a person acting suspiciously and exited their vehicles to investigate. Officer McNeil located the man, Darren Bridges, and attempted to speak with him.
A struggle ensued, during which Officer McNeil tried to use his Taser, but it was not effective. Bridges then shot Officer McNeil multiple times.
Responding officers shot and wounded Bridges, who then fled to a nearby apartment complex on Cindy Place and barricaded himself inside. After several hours, he surrendered and was taken into custody. Officer McNeil, a three-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department, died from his injuries. He was survived by his wife and two young children.
Darren Bridges, a 30-year-old convicted felon at the time of the incident, was charged with first-degree murder, obstruction of justice, attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer, and several felony narcotics offenses. Following years of legal delays, his trial commenced. The prosecution, led by District Attorney Jason Williams, presented evidence that included body camera footage. Bridges' defense team argued that he acted in self-defense, claiming an unlawful arrest. In September 2022, a jury found Darren Bridges guilty on all charges, including the first-degree murder of Officer Marcus McNeil. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
